Scientific Information

Mugwort refers to plants in the Artemisia genus. The term mugwort is used for several different species that grow primarily in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America. The most common type in North America and Europe is Artemisia vulgaris. Mugwort is a perennial plant with a rhizome root system that will rapidly spread after it is introduced to an area. The seeds are spread through the wind. Each plant can produce as much as 200,000 seeds. Despite how many seeds it produces, mugwort spreads primarily through it’s root system. Because of it’s capacity to spread, it can be disruptive of the growth of other, especially in areas that it is not native too. Mugwort is considered an invasive weed in New York.
